Pushing Creative Boundaries with Barbell Ballerina
As a growing video production company, we’re always exploring new ways to stretch our creativity and capabilities. One project that stands out was with a local ballerina launching her own fitness app. She wanted a visually striking, artistically bold video to showcase her program which was an ideal opportunity for us to dive in, experiment, and push creative boundaries while having a lot of fun in the process.
The Planning
Pre-production for this project relied heavily on detailed storyboarding. With so many creative scenes to capture, having a clear visual plan was essential to guide us through the shoot. Planning the timing of shots and mapping location changes upfront allowed us to manage the logistics efficiently.
The shoot itself spanned over 12 hours, so keeping the video production crew informed, engaged, and aligned was critical to maintaining a smooth workflow.
For every project, we dedicate significant time in pre-production to discuss potential risks, creative goals, and key details, minimizing the need for on-the-spot decisions. This project, in particular, demanded meticulous pre-production work to ensure we had enough time to capture every necessary shot.
The tone of the video was intense, highlighting how our clients’ training paid off in a discipline not traditionally focused on building strength. Our goal was to make sure that message came through clearly for the app launch.
A Behind the Scenes Look
This shoot was an exciting opportunity that challenged us creatively, pushed us to think on our feet, and encouraged us to find solutions when shots didn’t go as planned.
How we respond to these challenges reflects our flexibility and problem-solving skills, while also highlighting our ability to communicate clearly. Keeping both the client and crew informed and aligned at all times.
For a highly technical shoot like this, we spent a lot of time thinking about what our camera and lighting set ups were going to look like/what we needed out of them. The biggest thing we were working against was time. We had a lot of shots planned and wanted to make the most of our time in the ballet studio and gym.
To achieve this, we planned out a condensed but efficient lighting setup with a rolling key light and adjusted our supplementary lighting as needed with the goal of not touching it too much unless necessary. At the gym, we had the plan of lighting it over our subject to create a top down moody look which would help add intensity to these shots.

Why It Matters
