Local Power: Building Community-Owned Clean Energy

Recently, Visual Captive had the opportunity to work with The Congressional Progressive Caucus Center (CPC Center) and the McKnight Foundation capturing their event regarding clean energy.

This event was co-hosted by TakeAction Minnesota, Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), and the Building the Future Coalition.

We heard from many powerful speakers including Lieutenant Governor Pegy Flanagan, Rhiana Gunn-Wright, Aru Shiney-Ajay (Executive Director of SunRise Movement), and more.

We genuinely enjoy capturing live events. Not just for the production experience, but for how much we learn from them as well.

We spent two days filming a series of sessions focused on clean energy: from tax credits and funding opportunities to the broader impact these initiatives have on our world today.

The Setup

This was a two-day shoot using a multi-camera setup designed to cover both speakers and audience interaction. One of the unique challenges with this kind of event is accounting for the constant flow of attendees which can easily obstruct camera lines during a presentation. To solve for that, we relied on our SmallRig FreeBlazer tripods. These gave us elevated angles that stayed clear of foot traffic while still capturing clean, unobstructed shots of the speakers.

Benefits Of a Load In & Setup Day

Having a setup day beforehand made a huge difference for this shoot. When we’re able to walk the space ahead of time, it gives us:

  • Room to explore camera angles and composition

  • Time to run sound tests with the venue’s PA system

  • A chance to identify and troubleshoot any potential hiccups without the added time pressure

As a team, we always prioritize preparation. Building in setup time before the actual shoot allows us to fine-tune lighting, test sound, and make adjustments that lead to a much smoother production day.
